A Short History of Davids

To begin with, there was
of course an Adam
of Davids, a kind of
portent, of psalmody,
handy with a sling. If
he was ever, then forever
is because of him. He
is to blame for Ben Gurion,
and Blaine. His is
the throne to which
we've succeeded, one
christening by one, lords
all of us, with five-
letter dominions. The first
day of March is ours,
although also that
of Wales, but we'll take it, we'll
take it for posterity, for the
sake of the name, for its near-
circuity, as a small
reminder of Hockney, of Bowie,
of sculptors, lesser prime-ministers
and rent boys. A day for the
footballers whose ironic burden
is knowing neither the spelling
nor the meaning of zeitgeist, for
every male character in every car
insurance advert ever made,
for the clout of these phonemes,
those who hold and are held
by them, and however many
Daffyds and Daithís and Dawonds,
and how many are dead, and
how many just foetal, how many,
would you say, how many
were gassed and mass-buried
for bearing the name of a king
and wearing his star?
A day for them is plenty,
is more than enough.
I hold one syllable per hand.
They are each as heavy as listening.
